Why use digital transcription?

Other pages :

Digital transcription has now all but replaced the legacy tape based systems which were commonplace in many professional uses such as:

  • Legal transcription
  • Interviews
  • market research
  • patient medical notes

The advent of the compression of sound and digital wave files has meant that digital transcription has superceded the tape format, with file size being the primary reason for it's portability. The first digital transcribing systems used to record the speech as uncompressed wav files which were typically 300 Mb for 2 hours recording.

Progress with creating portable sound formats such as MP3 (MPEG (moving picture expert group) 1 Audio Layer 3) , DSS (a digital speech standard created by Olympus Corp) and more recently Real Media Formats and Ogg Vorbis have substantially rewritten the way which sound may be sampled and how it is stored on digital transcription recording systems.

Typically modern file compression has enabled digital transcription sound recordings to be reduced 12-20 fold in size which allows for its transfer by network means (i.e. not by floppy disc, CD or DAT)

Tape Life span Issues

The use of analogue transcription tapes has severe limitations, primarily due to the medium itself being delicate and restrictive in terms of length, typically a single micro/mini transcription cassette will hold 15-30 minutes of recorded speech per side. Whilst the digital transcription file will also increase in size proportionally to the amount of recorded speech, the cost per unit are considerably reduced with the continual slide in prices for digital media such as CD, DVDs and flash disks.

Advantages of Digital Recording

  • Increased email mailbox size means that broadband delivered attachments may now exceed 5 Mb with 10Mb files typically received by our office.

  • Outsourcing the files for transcription more reliable using a file upload facility

  • No courier charges for tapes to posted/mailed both ways.

  • Time-based reduction in quality usually associated with analogue tapes is avoided.

  • The quality of the digital dictation recordings is typically far higher than that of analogue tapes.

  • Remove the need to reuse tapes.

  • Solid state digital transcription recording systems function with no moving parts

  • You will be relieved when you can play back the recording without the tape destroying itself. (normally during that critical piece of dialogue!)
